Sheriff Tom Nutt
" Be Professional....
Efficient....
Courteous. "
T L Nutt, 937
Phelps Co Sheriff's Office
Sheriff Tom Nutt is a native Nebraskan, having grown up, and graduated from High School, in Elsie NE. Straight out of High School Tom joined the U.S. Army serving for three years, one of which was with the 199th Light Infantry Brigade in Vietnam. After discharge from the Army, in 1971, The Nebraska State Patrol beckoned, where, in a 26 year career, Tom rose through the ranks as Trooper and Corporal, and retired, in 1997 as Sergeant. Then, after having put up with retirement for nearly a year, Tom decided to run for Sheriff of Phelps County, won, and took office in January of 1999.
During his first term in office Sheriff Nutt has nearly doubled the Deputies force, contracted with Bertrand NE to handle their law enforcement duties and begun a 'Neighborhood Watch Program'. He has also contracted with the U.S. Marshall's Service, the Immigration & Naturalization Service and various surrounding communities to house their prisoners. Sheriff Nutt was the driving force behind our new Jail and Correctional facility for Phelps County, which opened December of 2003.
"I enjoy being Sheriff and working with the Community, the corrections officers, my deputies and other Law Enforcement agencies, and will probably continue to run for office until I feel I can no longer be productive or until the public decides that they want to go another direction with County law enforcement."
